Keep Reaching with Kathryn Treat

Please welcome Kathryn Treat as my guest blogger today. Kathryn is the author of Allergic To Life: My Battle for Survival, Courage, and Hope. The book is an inspiration; a story of hope, and Kathryn’s courage is impressive.

“It is a book of survival for anyone who has battled against chronic illness each day.”

Keep Reaching

I am honored that Bruce has invited me to write a guest blog post today.  I tossed and turned on what my topic today would be. Would I write about my book and my illness? Would I write about what it is like to suddenly have written a book? Or would I write about the amazing opportunities that have been afforded me since writing the book?

After pondering all this for some time, I realized that I wouldn’t have written a book nor had all the amazing opportunities afforded to me if my life hadn’t taken a sudden detour from healthy to quite ill. My journey through illness and sensitivities many cannot fathom is the reason I wrote “Allergic to Life: My Battle for Survival, Courage, and Hope”. I believe the reason for my illness was that I was meant to be a spokesman for those whose voice could not be heard or those who didn’t have the strength or conviction to tell their stories.

I was an active mother of two nearly grown teenagers when illness struck me. My life went from attending meeting after meeting, volunteering in clubs, and starting back to work to living with infection after infection and developing one strange infection after another. All of this was followed by becoming sensitive to the chemicals that most use in everyday life (my hair color, my laundry soap, the chemicals in my carpet, and the solution I used for my contacts). I became allergic to most foods and medications as well.

It was during my treatments at the Environmental Health Center in Dallas that I learned that I was not alone. There were others just like me. We were all sick, alone, and isolated. I suffered extreme depression as the illness took me down one horrific path after another. I began writing in my journal as a way of dealing with the day’s stress. My journal became the person I could talk to when my world was crumbling around me. I shed my tears and wrote my deepest feelings in it. It was hard to explain to others what my life was like and how difficult it was to just survive.  I decided that I needed to tell the story of my journey to let others who were suffering know they were not alone. I wrote to bring awareness to environmental illness.

I never considered myself a writer. I was crafty and could take a pattern and a scrap of material and create wonderful things. I could envision something quite different and alter the pattern to suit my needs. Suddenly through my writing I was thrust into a whole new world. It was the world of authors, bloggers, reviewers, and the scary social media scene.  Sure I knew a little about social media because I did have a personal Facebook page to communicate with friends and family. I had heard of Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest but really did not know much about them. I was told that I needed to begin blogging as a way of marketing and promoting myself and I needed to get a Twitter account. Fear paralyzed me. What could I possibly write in a blog on any regular basis that anyone would want to read?  What could I say in 140 characters or less? Would this really be able to help me promote and market my soon-to-be-released book? I jumped in with both feet with a “sink or swim” attitude. Soon I realized that I had plenty to say and the more I wrote the more my fear eased.

Through blogging I made connections with others who suffered from chronic illness and I made connections with fellow authors. Through these wonderful connections I have become a member of PnP Authors and Rave Reviews Book Club where I serve as Membership Director. Rave Reviews Book Club is also where I met Bruce. I have had the opportunity to participate in both written and video interviews. I have been hosted by fabulous women on my first ever blog tour.  Most importantly I have been accepted for not only my writing but for myself in spite of my crazy life. I have been accepted as a voice for environmental illness.

I knew there had to be a reason why I continued to fight when it would have been so easy to give up. Despite all the bad things that have happened since becoming ill, some wonderful and exciting things have happened as well. I encourage everyone to keep fighting through the strife in their lives.  There could be something truly beautiful just beyond your reach. Keep reaching!

LIFE PASSES HER BY

She sits and stares out the window
and she doesn’t recognize anything
Life has passed her by and
Nothing is the same

Where was she when all this happened?
She was here but
Life Passed her by

****

She reaches out but
touches nothing
Life is just past
her grasp
She stretches and bends
and tries again
But life passes her by

She talks to people but
it is a jumble
to understand what they say
The life she missed is
just out of her reach
Life passed her by

And The Tantrums Will Follow by Nonnie Jules

Today, I'm happy to welcome author Nonnie Jules! She is the founder and President of
Rave Reviews Book Club and is stopping by on her latest blog tour. And now, here's Nonnie:

~ ~ ~

Hello, and welcome to Day 8 of my 15-day, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY:  ARE YOU WATCHING NONNIE WRITE” Blog Tour.  I’m so pleased that Bruce has welcomed me here today.  I’m equally excited to be sharing with all of you, his readers and followers.  Bruce and I are fellow Board Members at RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB, where we promote and support Indie Authors and readers alike.  If you’d like to know more about RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB, visit us here www.RaveReviewsByNonnieJules.wordpress.com.

This month marks the one year anniversary of my burst onto the social media scene and it’s also the one year anniversary of my blog “WATCH NONNIE WRITE!”, and during that time, I have published three REALLY GOOD books and have learned so very much about the industry. Although I’ve been a writer for most of my life (actually, I was born one), I only just became a published author in 2013.  Some might say, “In that short amount of time, what does she know?” Well, I’m here to tell you that “SHE” has learned a lot!  “SHE” has taken the time to hone her skills in the writing department as well as her knowledge.  “SHE” has taken the bull by the horn and run full speed ahead in building her author platform and establishing herself in the writing industry.  “SHE” is making her name KNOWN.

On each stop of my tour, I am sharing with you tips on writing, publishing and support, all topics equally important to the writing industry.  I hope that what I am imparting, you will take, mull over, and then act on in the best interest of YOU.

With that being said, here is…

“AND THE TANTRUMS WILL FOLLOW”

I live in constant support of others, so when I founded RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB it was just another way for me to support and help to propel the many wonderful authors out there who are so deserving of the little support I can offer and so much more.  In an extremely short period of time, our virtual book club has grown by leaps and bounds, and I think today our membership stands around 350.  We have a board of ten very exceptional and extremely talented writers who give of themselves daily to be in service to our members.  They do it without pay, they do it without reservation and there are those times, they do it in the midst of many complaints, trials and shows of un-appreciation.  BUT, they keep serving.

Our focal point at RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB is mainly that of SUPPORT.  We ask and strongly encourage each of our members to jump right in and support their fellow club members by purchasing, reading and reviewing their books.  We also ask that they #Follow each member on our online roster so that they will be able to show their support of each other via social media.  A vast majority of our members are those kinds of members who are also all about support and we so appreciate them.

But, as with any organization there are those who do absolutely NOTHING but expect that they are served, served and served some more without ever giving any of themselves to help others.  We can’t please those people and you know what, we’re not even going to try.

When these “kinds” join us, they join us for one reason and one reason only:  TO SEE WHAT WE CAN DO FOR THEM.  That’s their only agenda.  They have no desire to give to others, only to take.  And when they find that they are not being “given” in the manner THEY FEEL they should be, that’s when the trantrums follow.  They take to social media to try and bad-mouth what we do here…they try to defame and degrade our intentions.  But you know what, I have said this before and I will continue to say this:  when you live your life in such a way that everything you do is above reproach, NO COMMENTS, nor any DISPLAYS OF UGLINESS WILL EVER BE ABLE TO TOUCH YOU.  We here at RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB are Board Members who are held in high esteem, and I, being the President, make no apologies for the way that I run my ship…that ship that has PROVEN time and time again, that we walk our talk each and every day.  The proof is in the pudding.  We set out to PROFILE, PROMOTE & PROPEL the careers of Indie Authors and we are doing just that!  Our member-authors are seeing increases in their book sales like some have NEVER seen before!  Our member-authors are gaining book reviews in record numbers like NEVER before!  And their name recognition, well, I receive email and Twitter DMs on a regular basis stating how “no one knew my name before RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB,” so I’ll repeat, we are doing just what we set out to do.

So, here is my invitation for you to take a look at our virtual book club for yourself.  Ignore those that are not happy because they didn’t get what they wanted, when they felt they should have it.  Don’t let the venomous words of those that love to complain and destroy, keep you from the best and most supportive environment that I’ve ever experienced in my many years.  Stop by and speak to our members…you know, those Authors that you see on social media actually SUPPORTING OTHERS.  They’ll be happy to tell you of the GRAND SUPPORT they receive from the members of RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB.

Here’s to seeing you on the other side of membership.  And before you grace us with your awesome presence, please remember…when you support here, YOU GET SUPPORTED here.  It’s as simple as that.

Thanks for allowing me to share with you today and if you’d like to follow my tour, please do so at www.nonniewrites.wordpress.com  and do share your thoughts!

Six More Weeks Of... Summer?

So did the Easter Bunny see his shadow, or not? I missed that yesterday.

What’s that? I’m confused? No, I don’t think so. It makes as much sense as a groundhog predicting the weather, which, by the way, it’s been far longer than six weeks since February 2 – and winter has still not disappeared.

On the bright side, we did have some sunshine today! And, I have mowed the lawn a couple of times. That is, a couple of times this year. I think there would be no point in mowing it twice today! Although, I did have a neighbor once who mowed his lawn every single day of the summer. No, I’m not kidding.

Not only did he mow every day, he trimmed and weeded too. And raked. And swept off the sidewalk. Obviously, he had more time in his day than I. With all that lawn care, you’d think he would have had the best-looking grass in the neighborhood, but no. His lawn was about average – like everyone else’s.

I didn’t talk to him much ‘cause I figured he was a little crazy – and his mower was always running. But one spring day he stopped mowing long enough to tell me that we were going to have a long summer that year. Then, he said something about an Easter Bunny. I’m not exactly sure what the Easter Bunny had to do with the longevity of summer but he seemed convinced they were related.

Thing is, he was right! We did have a long summer. Although, I’m pretty sure that was due to the weather staying warmer longer and had nothing at all to do with a fictitious rabbit – whether said rabbit saw his shadow or not!

To be fair, the guy didn’t mention anything about shadows, that was just my conjecture. I still have no idea what he was talking about. But at least now, you know the reason behind my opening question. See? I’m not really confused after all! Or, am I?

SPOTLIGHT Author - Janice G. Ross

RRBC JR
Janice G. Ross

Meet Janice G. Ross, Rave Reviews Book Club Social Media Director
and the author of Loving Nate.

Janice Ross was born in Guyana, South America and migrated to the USA in 1980. Although her citizenship certificate now reads the United States of America, she considers herself a citizen of the world. Sure she has not physically been around the world and back, but she’s travelled in her mind and dreams.

Janice is an author. She enjoys writing about social issues and personal experiences. Janice’s debut release was entitled Damaged Girls. She uses the three books in that series to detail the effects of different forms of abuse, discussing issues that are known to be taboo. Her next release, Jumping Ship, is a dedication to her country of birth and an introductory novella to the Island Hopping Series – due out in 2014. It’s poised to be a colorful and emotional experience of life, love and family. As of present, she is also a contributor to a short story collection – Just Between Us, Inspiring Stories by Women. And lastly, Loving Nate is a novella about the realities of losing one’s self to love.

Janice enjoys reading. And is drawn to stories with distinct characters that she can love or hate, characters she can form alliances with or characters that she can swear off and despise. She is also weak for a good cultural tale, preferably in the form of historical fiction. Janice loves to be taken off guard by clever language and settings.

Janice is also a devout supporter and promoter of other authors through social media. She hosts a weekly show, Cultural Cocktails, on the largest social radio network, Blog Talk Radio.

Book Description

Loving Nate is Leah's story of falling in love with Mr. Perfect. Leah falls fast and hard, losing all sense of reasoning. Love can do that to a gal, especially when the guy is as smooth as Nathan Moore. Loving Nate is about Leah's journey of falling in love, when she should have been standing in love.

Author’s Note:

I’ve decided to provide two very different endings to this novella. Have you ever made a decision and wondered whether or not it was the right choice? Or perhaps you made the right choice because you knew that the alternative would’ve been disastrous? This is my gift to readers. Regardless of Leah’s final choice, I wanted readers to be able to reflect on the possibilities.

The Birthday Conundrum

The problem with birthdays is, they tend to make you older. The problem with not having birthdays is, well, I’m sure you can figure that out. Having birthdays, or not having them, one thing is for certain; no one is getting any younger. Profound, I know!

As you may have guessed, last week, I celebrated another anniversary of the day of my birth. (You really can only ever have one actual birthday).

My son called to wish me a happy birthday, and like many others, asked if I felt older – and that got me to thinking. I know, we’re all in trouble when I start the process of pondering these things! The answer to his question was no, I didn’t really feel older. I don’t really consider myself to be old. And that sometimes leads to problems.

How could that be a problem?

Well, I still think of myself as 20 years old, and still think I can do all the things I did then. And keep up the same life-style. There are still 24 hours in the day and I like to stay busy, oh, about 24 of them. My brain and body used to cooperate but lately, it’s a different story. Now, there is a war of sorts. My brain says, “Who needs sleep? Go for it.” But the rest of me has started objecting. So, while I may think I’m 20, at times my body feels like it’s pushing 80. That is definitely a problem.

So, I guess the full answer to the question is, I don’t feel older – it’s hard to feel older when you already feel 80!

But I don’t think I could change – even if I wanted to. For me, any amount of time spent sleeping, or some other passive activity, is time wasted – nothing gets done. I’m pretty sure no one on their deathbed ever said, “I wish I would have slept more.” No, it’s usually that they wish they had done more. And so, that’s what I’m doing – more. I’m told it’s unhealthy and may shorten my life, that I could run short of birthdays. That may be true. As I mentioned, that is one of the problems with birthdays - when they run out.

I guess if I have my choice I’ll go with just getting older. Somehow though, I don’t think it’s up to me. On one hand, I might see well over a hundred birthdays. Or, maybe I’ll be the first to say, “I should have slept more.”
